Abnormal Liver Tests

The  majority of people with significant liver diseases do not have any symptoms, and mild abnormalities in liver blood tests might be the first signs of a problem.  Many people have their liver function tested as part of routine health and blood checks, because they may be on certain medication or even when they are feeling under the weather.

About 1 in every 6 people will have an abnormality in at least one of these, so abnormal liver tests are quite common.  It is important to check to make sure that there aren't any serious causes of these abnormalities.  This process usually involves consultation with a liver specialist, blood tests and scanning the liver.

Results can be gathered quickly and a further consultation can often conclude the process with ample opportunity to discuss the findings, explore any questions or concerns and suggest individualised advice to avoid further problems.

In some patients, we do find significant disease, and there may be a need for further testing so that effective and prompt treatment can be started if required.
