Infection with liver viruses such as hepatitis B or hepatitis C is common around the globe.  Over half a billion people are estimated to be currently infected with just these two viruses. Left alone, these viruses can cause scarring of the liver, cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer.  

There is a highly effective vaccine that can protect against hepatitis B and while the virus cannot be eliminated completely from the body in those who are chronically infected, very good drugs that can control the infection are available.  

Things are even more positive for people infected with hepatitis C.  In recent years there has been a revolution in the treatment of hepatitis C with many excellent drugs available now and more still being developed.  Today, the overwhelming majority of patients can be cured with a short course of tablets with very few side effects.
